ANACS vs. NGC and PCGS
When I decided to start collecting coins by joining Numis Network’s Silver Premier Club, a friend of mine who has been collecting coins, both bullion and numismatic, told me that the big three graders were the ones to stick with - ANACS, PCGS, and NGC. Done. He told me to stick with quality. Check. The club only offers 70′s graded by one of these 3 best grading agencies. He said silver was more affordable and stable but get some gold coins too. OK.
ANACS is not “quite” as good as PCGS and NGC?
His favorite sites hardly carried any ANACS graded coins. These are very respectable sites too. So I needed to find some answers for myself. I Googled ANACS, PCGS, and NGC several different ways. A lot of links took me to eBay but 3 or 4 took me to coin collecting forums where seasoned collectors shared their opinions.
So many opinions abound. Some like ANACS the best. Some like PCGS best others like NGC. What I have found out is that I like buying off of a trusted dealer who will buy back my coins 5 years from now at what I paid for them. More on that later.
It seems to me that we all want to be the person “in the know” our own best shrewd investor. I also found out some interesting “soap opera” type history of these three grading companies.
Here is some inside info on the grading services from a professional grader who worked at NGC but now deals mostly with ANACS. Keith Love says that it is a small community, the coin grading business and many of the graders worked at all three companies! It makes sense. If a company needs to hire someone in a particular field e.g. a grader or a business banker, it is far more cost effective and easier to hire away from another company than to train someone from scratch. Keith was making $20.000 per week and was one of the youngest graders ever certified. Keith Love credentials
Keith is now with the company I do all my coin buying through, Numis Network. ANACS grade 70 coins make up most of our portfolio. And we are lucky to have him as our main buyer and expert.
Here is some more inside information about ANACS vs. the other guys.
Opinion sways between the three of them in waves of popularity. According to Numis Network’s #1 Rep, Ray Higdon in his article on ANACS grading, ANACS became somewhat unpopular among the dealers when Home Shopping Network began selling certified coins. The HSN salesman is Mike Mezak and because of his maybe 8 hours a month on TV, was putting a dent in sales of other dealers and Mike sells mostly ANACS graded coins. How much of a dent? With over $1 Billion in sales on HSN and with $125 million last year alone it was a pretty big dent.
And of course it’s easy to start badmouthing the new competition on the block. Mike introduced a paradigm shift, buying coins off TV from the comfort of one’s home instead of driving to a local mom and pop dealer. And Mike is most closely associated with ANACS and despite ANACS being the oldest grading company and having a board member on the actual ANA board, others dealers did not like this shift.
Mike has now dominated the numismatic coin business for over 20 years and is a trusted source of coins. If he were a scam he would not have been around for 20 years. Really. Yes, you can easily buy coins off the internet, eBay, other auction sites, but have you ever tried to sift through the maze of info? Mike as well as Numis Network, simplify things.
Numis offers mostly ANACS coins and offers 2 things that no one has – a 5 year 100% Buyback Guarantee and a Free coin of the month plan through their Silver Premier Club. Guess what else Numis offers exclusively through this club? Keith Love Signature Series coins. Numis has an expert’s expert out there buying for us. Hunting down far better deals than we can find on our own. These are special coin finds that only members of the club get. I like this far better than digging around on eBay hoping I’m not getting a counterfeit. Yes, most people can buy anything cheaper at a flea market. But Numis retail prices rival eBay prices many times. Is Numis always the cheapest? Go to shopnbc.com or govmint.com and compare. I look at it this way, even if I can get a certain coin at a better retail price, nothing beats the price of free! Plus no one offers the 100% 5 year buyback guarantee.
There is one last thing that Numis offers – your own coin distributorship without any inventory, ridiculously low start up and monthly cost, shopping website ready to go with mainly ANACS 70 grade coins, Keith Love buying for you, and Mike Mezak – the undisputable sales king of certified coins on your side selling for you. The club is good!! You’re invited. Whether you are a seasoned collector or a newb you have to check out the Silver Premier Club presented by Mike.
